College Question 183

What do you hope to accomplish within the next ten years? Explain.

I hope to accomplish within the next ten years to complete a marathon, 42 kilometres. I always wondered how it would be runnning such a long distance without stopping at any point, and of course my goal is to be under the three hours mark, which means I would have to train and run at a very fast pace.

I just recently ran a half-marathon in Delhi, it was my first half-marathon ever and I really enjoyed it. Over 15.000 people were running at the same time. Now I want to reach for more, being motivated to train more, my goal to accomplish within the next ten years would be denefitly running a marathon under three hours.

I always enjoyed running, I just love it. Especially long distance is my favorite, and a marathon is a real challange for me. 5, 10, 15 kilometres is not enough for me. Every year there are so many marathons organized, and I can only run it when I am the age of 18 years old or above, so I still have two years to practice and get ready for a marathon.

Of course, the first marathons I will gain experience and maybe not run to my best but after accomplishing several marathons one goal for sure would be to run 42 kilometres under the three hours mark.

Motivation is the biggest factor that helps me, especially experiencing one of India’s biggest races is a very nice experience and of course I want to go for more after completing a half-marathon.

College Question 125

Tell about the most unforgettable experience you’ve ever had.

My most unforgettable experience that I ever had was running the Airtel Delhi half-marathon. It was an astonishing run, as over 15.000 people participated and ran 21 kilometers. The event was incredible, as the flaire was amazing. Seeing so many people run at the same time, following the same goal, to finish 21 kilometers in less than three hours.

The previous day I picked up my timing chip and running bib at the JLN stadium in New Delhi, than I went out for dinner, ate lots of pasta to carboload myself for the big race.

At the race day I woke up around 5’clock in the morning, preparing by drinking lots of energy, nutrient drinks and eating more power bars. Arriving at the stadium, where the starting line was, I checked in and got myself to the area of the starting line. Over a couple of thousands of people were already waiting there. As it finally started it took quite a while for me to pass the starting line, the race already started seven minutes before, since I had a timing chip it did not matter. The first 5 kilometres I ran at a slower pace as I had to pass many thousands of people that were already walking.

Around seven kilometres the professional Kenians and Ethiopians passed me already as they were on kilometre 16. This was pretty amazing, this motivated me to run even faster.

The last kilometres were really hard to run, as my legs to tired and I did not feel them anymore. I finished at a time of 1 hour and 39 minutes. A very good time, I aimed for about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Overall the race was a very nice experience, and I would always run it again.

College Question 16

Describe a risk that you have taken and discuss its impact on your life

The risk that I have taken was attending boarding school in India. The school is located in 2000 meters altitude, in the Himalaya‘s. Woodstock School is an international school the provides education to students from Kindergarten to 12th grade with Christian values. Very different then it was like attending school in Germany. Both were international schools but Woodstock School was more interesting in many differing ways.

Before attending this school I did not know who it would impact me and my future life. Instead of doing the IB school system I turned to the Advanced Placement‘s. My mom mentioned that I need certain AP‘s in order to study in Germany. The course selection had to be specific as, in addition, certain credits had to be accomplished.

I also learned a lot about the India and the culture that the people live with. It was very contrasting to what it was like in Germany. To learn about such variety of culture really does impact my future life and my ahead-carrier. I really appreciate that I could learn about India‘s culture. To experience a different country that close was a complete new adventure, spending more than half of the year in boarding school had its positive sites but also negative ones. One pro is that being together with friends, but on the other side being away from home does somehow suck.

I will figure out the impacts of this experience the following years, whether I manage to go to university or somewhere else. I am really excited what the future will bring out to me.

College Question 19

Write you own essay question and answer it.

What is your english teacher like?

My english teacher, Mr. P., is a funny guy who makes the lesson AP English Language & Composition very interesting. He has a sense of humor that I really like, in spite of the fact that he also pushes me to write many essays, in and outside of class.

Mr. P‘s class is always fun, whether doing a warm up, thesis writting activity or presentations. There would be teachers in the same school, that could teach the same course but not with such a passion as he does, and with not so many funny moments.

Mr. P. is always there when I need help, which is good and I appreciate that. Some teachers do try to escape somehow when I would annoy them that much with drafts of essays and outlines. The help I receive is always good feedback which I can use to improve my assignment but it also helps me in my overall writting skills.

Mr. P. is also active outside the classroom, I see him during school events like Cross Country. He rented a bicycle and went off with the runnners. As well as on a scooter, driving around the streets like some crazy guy with a student behind him taking pictures of me while running.

To have Mr. P. as an English teacher is great fun. Last year he was the head of high school, now he is my teacher. I think there is no one else in this school that could make english this much fun but at the same time motivates me to work hard on my assignments.

College Question 85

Describe how the character of a literary work you have read recently has made a lasting impression on you.

The literary work I have read recently is the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo‘s Nest by Ken Kesey. In the book the narrator, Chief Bromden, faces difficulties to socially interfere with other people in the mental hospital. He has been the quite one, and during the novel his character develops into a free-thinking one. He eventually escapes from the “combine“, the system the heard nurse Ms. Ratched keeps in the mental hospital to retain control over the patients.

The way Chief Bromden is treated in the beginning of the novel is very different to what he is in the end. Chief Bromden is taller than any one else in the mental hospital, still he is oppressed by the workers in the mental hospital. They tell him to clean up, talk about him and more that shows the hierarchy in the hospital. During the plot, a new patient enters the hospital. He is the spark that enrages Chief Bromden to reveal his real character. After all Chief Bromden makes up his mind and  flees from the hospital.

The character development of Chief Bromden has really made a premonition on me. Chief Bromden was the guy who would always go along with others, no matter what they would do, at the end he was the rebell who escaped from the mental hospital. I find this really astonishing that a person can change that much and eventually turn things around for him. In addition, in the novel not everyone manages to escape from the “combine“, some patients kill themself or leave the dorm but he does what he wants to, making his own choice.

College Question 88

State in a well-written essay: a) your reason for selecting Loyola College and b) your personal goals and professional plans upon completion of college. (Loyola)

I think that Loyola College is a very special college. Even the name, Loyola, inspires me way too much. My plan was always to attend an outstanding college that would push me and develop my academic records even more. I think that Loyola College is this certain place where I can find all this.

I looked at a lot of colleges and after a long search I found the Loyola College. I examined the applications process in depth, considered all the majors that can be taken and I believe that I have finally found the college I want to attend. Looking at the homepage of Loyola College made me stunned. To find all this additional information was incredible. I really focus on being one of the many “students“ who will be shaped into “agents of social change“ (Vision Statement, Loyola College).

My personal plans upon completion of college is to be involved even more with Loyola Colllege. I would like to be a professor, teaching at Loyola College, preferably in Economics as I do find this subject interesting. As the Loyola College is located in Chennai, India, it makes the place even more interesting for me. My personal plan is to stay in India most of my life, working at Loyola College.

My personal goal, of course, is the same as my professional plans. Being a professor at Loyola College. There is something in the Loyola College community that means something really special to me. I could see myself working at Loyola until I would retire.

College Question 184

Should college students be required to take physical education courses? Why or why not?

I think that college students should be required to take physical education courses. These courses do not have to cover all aspects of the human body etc. but should teach students what is good and what is not good. To take such courses could even help in daily situations.

Some students like, some dont‘; physical education. P.E. teaches about various aspects about the human body but also sports are being played in these courses. There are two kind of courses, when you act out and when you learn theory. To require to take such courses would really help the average college student.

The theory lessons; learning first aid, health, and more that should be known is taught in these courses. To have this kind of knowledge would be very good, everytime an accident can occur where first aid is needed. In addition to live a healthy life style is important and physical education teaches about this.

Acting out, playing sports can be fun, and it is very healthy. To exercise on a daily basis trains the body and reduces the chances of catching any disease and more.

Even tho college students should have a freedom in their course selection, physical education is a very important aspect that is often ignored. The main goal behind it should be to teach students the basics of the body needs, this is first aid, healthy life style and the importance of exercising on a daily basis.

College Question 169

Do you believe that your academic record accurately reflects your abilities? Explain.

I do not believe that my academic record accurately reflects on my abilities. In school there a subjects that are not suited for everyone. If a person is more into this subject than over‘s it is more likely that this person will succeed better than the people that do not like this certain subject.

Everyone has some weakness or strength that is shown on the academic record. To judge someone about their academic record is very tough. The teachers matter as well, the conditions the student is under should be recognized as well.

If I have a feeling that a certain subject is fun, I tend to be better in this subject than in other subjects. Another fact that can affect the academic record is the teacher. What if the teacher does not like me? What if the tests the teacher sets are always confusing? And so on. One current example from one of my classes is that the test the teacher has set was very confusing, and other quiz question were a misunderstanding. If the question was asked in a different way I would have gotten it and would have scored at 100%, but I did not. If another teacher would have taught me could I have done better? These kind of question I often I ask myself, and what if the motivation is gone? Motivation is very important if I want to score high points, if I feel the lack of motivation I tend to slack of a little.

I see my abilities higher than my academic record. Some subjects are not suited for me, some are more interesting and in some the teacher is not the right one. To really judge somone‘s abilities is not really possible. On somedays I do believe I perform better and on other days I do worse.

College Question 186

Should prison inmates be allowed to take college courses? Explain why or why not.

I believe that prison inmates shoud be allowed to take college courses. Prison inmates have no future after they come out of prison. The prison has no real effects on an inmate, therefore rehabilitation courses should be offerd so that people that have done something wrong can start over again and return into society as a normal person.

Once being in prison the life of a person can be seen as done or finished. The chances of entering society back in the same way as entered the prison is not a very good thing. Most ex- prison inmates will not find jobs and therefore earn any money. They have less chances of being the person who they really want to be, if they want to change back into an average common man, of course.

To offer college courses for prison inmates will give them a higher chance to enter society back as a normal person. The changes of them finding a job will increase as they show the good determination that lies inside of them. They can catch up on things they have missed during the time being in prison. If the prison is just a place where people are being held for a particular reason I think that the point of having a prison is wrong. To offer these kind of rehabilitation programms would be the better approach.

To not offer any college courses or any other rehabilitation courses for prison inmates is kind of the wrong thing, as these people are in prison for a particular reason. If they do not change and let free, the chances of repeating crime is most likely higher than if the inmate would have entered a rehab. programm to change into a better person.

College Question 59

59Community service can be a valuable part of the college experience. If you were to devote one year of service to a volunteer project, what would it be, and what would you hope to accomplish?

If I was to devote one year of service to a volunteer project I would chose to work with people that are stuck in countries where war is going. I would preferable work with children that are a little younger than me. My hope to accomplish would be to give them hope for a new and better life they can have. I think I would engage my self best to work with children that are stuck in these kind of situations. Seeing these kind of things in television every day is very sad, to try to make a change of this would be very enjoying for me. To teach these children that life cannot be that sad would really be a compelling job that I would do. I could imagine to teach them in school and play with them which would really change their lifes. Often these kids do not have any future other to stay on the streets. To change this would be a great opportunity. This would be my main goal I would like to accomplish. Seeing these kids growing up and making something better out of their life would be the goal to reach. Unfortunately there are too many kids that face this everday, all around the world. But getting this chance to actually do something would be a challenging but on the other hand also a very learning experience opportunity for me.
